Our story begins in the prosperous town of Lukang during the Qing Dynasty. It is here that our distinctive tastes and culinary traditions were first born, then carefully passed down through the ages.
The successful founder, Huang Jin, was a lover of poetry. He often hosted literati and scholars, serving exquisite pastries to accompany tea and poetry. Among these, the “Phoenix Eye Cake” was highly praised for its elegant shape and delicate texture.
In 1877, the “Yu Jen Jai” pastry shop was established, named after his study. For over a century, we have continuously developed a variety of pastries, preserving our heritage to this day.
Carrying forward the flavors of several generations, our craftsmanship remains meticulous. Today, these delicacies are no longer exclusive treats for scholars, but a must-buy souvenir for travelers visiting Lukang—a joyful treat everyone can easily enjoy.
While many perceive “Yu Jen Jai” as a brand defined by “nostalgia” and “tradition,” we have always evolved with the times while honoring our heritage.
Since our establishment, we have never been complacent. To ensure that traditional culture is not lost in the tides of time, we continuously push forward and take the next step, firmly believing that all innovation is for the sake of preserving tradition.
Through years of dedicated research and development, we have introduced creative products such as the chess-inspired (Xiangqi) “You-Yi Cake,” alongside modern, health-conscious recipes with reduced sugar and oil. It is through this balance that the rich aroma of Yu Jen Jai’s pastries has beautifully endured for over a century.
Located at the entrance of the bustling Lukang Old Street, “Wan Shu Fang” was originally two historic houses that had fallen into disrepair over many years. Mr. Huang Yi-bin, the proprietor of Yu Jen Jai, could not bear to see these old buildings lose their vitality to neglect. He collaborated with local historians and restoration experts to breathe new life into them, while faithfully preserving their original architectural beauty.
The shop’s name, “Wan” (翫), embodies the elegant and sophisticated lifestyle of ancient literati, who found joy in arts and cultural leisure. We hope our guests can experience these refined pleasures of the past within this space. In addition to serving refreshing tea and pastries, we offer a hands-on experience with the traditional Taiwanese board game, “Huluwen,” and host interactive events rooted in local culture from time to time.
In line with Yu Jen Jai’s enduring brand spirit, promoting Lukang and revitalizing historic buildings have long been our goals. Through these efforts, we hope to deepen the public’s connection to and understanding of Lukang’s rich history and humanistic heritage.
